Leslie asks: I may sound a little green in asking this, but freelance writing poses no medical benefits. If you are attempting to pursue a career manipulating the written word, is there a way to get medical benefits through say the state? Thank you very much. Hi Leslie, That is an excellent question and a problem for freelance writers. If you can pay the premiums straight up from your writing then good. Most can't. The next thing to do is look for associations that provide group coverage for writers. Check them out on this link. The National Writer's Union was one group that did provide coverage but they've, apparently, discontinued the practice, after a scandal last year. Try the Editorial Writer's Association. I've heard that a local Chamber of Commerce may have medical insurance. And look at non-profits as well. If you live in New York state you can get medical insurance through Mediabistro Hope those help you get started! Medical coverage is a problem for all self- employed people, not simply freelancers.
