Over a period of twenty years I have learned a few tricks about conducting and applying research. The introduction of the Internet has opened a universe of possibilities. However,the 'net itself will not be enough. The researcher needs to apply all the rules and basic ideas of research. You can't avoid the mighty library in your efforts!

The crucial skill to bring to research is the ability to define the objective of your project. This seems obvious but many people still fail to take a blank sheet of paper and put a one or two sentence statement about what they are researching and why they are researching. The more specific your statements the better able you will shape the research you do.

• Know as much epistemology that you can handle.
• Research is open-ended problem solving.
• There is no such thing as absolute expertise.
